Rogan Productions today announces the appointment of Mick McAvoy as Head of Rogan Scotland. Mick will join the company towards the end of the year, leading the Glasgow-based team.

Launched in October 2021 from the company's Glasgow base at The Hub, Pacific Quay, Rogan Scotland has built a fast-growing reputation over the past five years, picking up multiple industry awards, among them the RTS Scotland Award for Becoming Frida Kahlo (BBC) and earning several BAFTA Scotland nominations along the way. The team's slate spans high-profile feature documentaries including Channel 4 and Film4's The Secret of Me, made in partnership with Screen Scotland, The Rise and Fall of Michelle Mone, alongside fast-turnaround current affairs titles. It sits alongside parent company Rogan Productions' wider slate such as BAFTA-winning Grenfell: Uncovered (Netflix) and critically acclaimed Free Nelson Mandela (Channel 4).

Mick joins from Firecrest Films, where he has been Head of Documentaries, overseeing a slate that includes returning BBC series Paramedics on Scene and Highland Cops as well as Rescue: Extreme Medics for Channel 4 and the BAFTA-Scotland winning The Hunt for Peter Tobin. A multi-award-winning Executive Producer with a career spanning over two decades, Mick has previously held roles at Two Rivers Media, STV Productions and Mentorn Scotland. His credits include Piper Alpha: Fire in the Night and Dunblane: Our Story, both winners of the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Documentary, and Yes/No: Inside the Indyref, winner of the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Specialist Factual Programme. He also played a key role in developing long-running network series including Antiques Road Trip and Cowboy Trap, and has executive-produced titles for ITV, Channel 4, Five, Sky, the BBC and Discovery, including Frankie Boyle's Tour of Scotland, Prisons: First and Last 24 Hours and Walking the Amazon.

Mick will succeed Mark Hedgecoe, who leaves Rogan in October to become Creative Director of STV Studios Factual after five years leading Rogan Scotland. James Rogan will serve as Acting Head of Rogan Scotland in the interim, until Mick arrives.

Mick McAvoy said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Rogan Scotland. I’ve long admired the ambition, creativity and quality of Rogan’s work, and I can’t wait to build on the success of the fantastic documentaries and series that Mark and the team have produced. I’m looking forward to helping deliver on the ambition for Rogan Scotland to become a world-leading factual producer, making landmark series and creating returning factual brands for audiences both in the UK and around the world.

I’m also hugely proud and grateful to have been part of the brilliant and talented team at Firecrest Films. It has been a genuine privilege to work alongside them and to have had the opportunity to work on some of the company’s very best series with some of the best people in the business.”

Victoria Wood remains one of Britain’s most cherished entertainers – a comic genius who conquered stand up, sketch comedy, drama, sitcoms and musical theatre and whose work reshaped the landscape of British humour. But behind the joyous persona – the singer, the satirist, the sharp-witted writer – lay a young woman navigating insecurity, anger, and self-doubt. This is the story of how that shy young woman became the Victoria Wood that her fans know and love.

The odds of Nelson Mandela walking to freedom on that bright day, 11th February 1990, were always stacked against him. Yet hindsight gives the impression his freedom was inevitable. This was the starting point for our series.

Anna Burns joins Rogan Productions

Rogan Productions is delighted to welcome Anna Burns as our new Head of Scripted Development, a role that signals our next chapter as we grow from global documentary leaders into a home for distinctive scripted stories. Her appointment reflects our excitement about the slate already in funded development with major broadcasters and the momentum behind our first scripted projects. Anna joins us at a pivotal moment. Following the release of Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal for HBO Max – our ground-breaking drama doc series about Operation Peyzac – we have seen first-hand how our factual storytelling can evolve into compelling scripted narratives.

The blend of first-hand testimony and dramatised scenes in Boom Box has opened up rich creative territory, and Anna will be at the heart of shaping where we go next.

Owned and run by James and Soleta Rogan, our company has already had a remarkable year with six titles released, including Bowie: The Final Act, Becoming Victoria Wood and The Secret of Me, all of which reached cinema audiences as well as viewers at home. These projects, alongside awards recognition for Grenfell: Uncovered on Netflix – including BAFTA Craft nominations and a win for Emerging Talent: Factual – have reinforced our belief that there is space for bold, authored storytelling that speaks to global audiences.

Anna steps into a senior creative team that has been carefully built over the past few years. Her arrival follows the appointments of Merle Currie as Head of Unscripted Development and Jenny Popplewell as Head of Factual, creating a leadership group that spans the full range of our output. Together, they will help ensure that every project, whether scripted or unscripted, is crafted with the same integrity, ambition and attention to detail that our partners expect from Rogan Productions.

In taking on this new role, Anna will lead the growth of our scripted slate, nurturing ideas from first conversations through to commission and production. She will work closely with writers, directors and producing partners to champion distinctive voices and stories, while drawing on our track record of telling complex, often sensitive real-world narratives with care.
